The State of Vanderbilt Football

I am a Vanderbilt alumni and former Vandy student-athlete.

I have been listening to people for the past eight years talk about how great our current football coach is.

People tell me that Bobby Johnson has made Vanderbilt more competitive than ever. To me, that's like someone telling you your wife is a little less ugly than she used to be.

I think Bobby Johnson is a good man, but after looking a little deeper at the facts of his eight years at the helm of Vanderbilt's ship, I think it may be time for a mutiny:

A few things to keep in mind about Vandy football under Bobby Johnson:

1) Record through eight seasons: 29-64 (31.2% winning percentage) – If Vandy loses last two games of this year, Johnson’s record becomes 29-66 (30% winning percentage)

2) Number of wins against Div. I – AA opponents in eight seasons: 7 (24% of BJ’s win in his eight seasons)

3) Record in previous eight seasons to Bobby Johnson arriving: 24-64 (27.3% winning percentage). To put it a different way, we are 3% better under Bobby Johnson (break open the bubbly)

4) Over the last eight years, as compared to the previous eight years to Johnson, Vandy has lost the same number of games (more if Vandy loses last two of this season) and won five more games (0.62 more wins per year under BJ – now that’s progress!)

5) Number of seasons with two wins: 4 (betting on 2009 season ending 2-10) – 50% of the years Johnson has been at Vandy, the Dores will have finished the season with two wins

6) Keep in Mind: Jay Cutler (not a Johnson recruit and statistically speaking the greatest QB in Vandy history) was under center for 50% of the games Bobby Johnson has coached at Vandy

7) Percentage of games Vandy has lost by at least two touchdowns during Bobby Johnson’s era: 31%

8) Some other things to keep in mind:

a) 0-3 vs. Service Academies (0-2 vs. Navy and 0-1 vs. Army)

b) 0-2 vs. Middle Tennessee State University

c) 0-3 vs. Georgia Tech

d) 1-1 vs. Duke

e) 1-2 vs. Wake Forest

f) 0-1 vs. Rutgers

g) 1-3 vs. Miss. State

h) 2-5 vs. Kentucky
