A Little History Lesson

The Medicare Act of 1965 put forward by a Democratic president and Democratic-run Congress was an extremely controversial bill at the time it was put forth by President Johnson.

I think it's important to remember how this vote broke down:

House: Republicans Voting for Medicare Act of 1965 = 70 of the 140 members
Senate: Republicans Voting for Medicare Act of 1965 = 13 of the 32 members

So, of the 172 Republicans in Congress voting on this extremely controversial legislation, 48% voted for the bill.

I think Medicare was a bad idea in 1965, and it has certainly proven to be a nightmare piece of legislation, but at least it was supported by 377 members of Congress (294 Democrats and 83 Republicans).

The Health Care Bill that was voted on last night in the House has not received a single Republican vote in either the House or Senate.

Never in the history of our country has so magnanimous of a bill been passed with ZERO VOTES from the opposition party.
